Cooling it All Off

In such a hot, humid, tropical climate, is it any wonder that Indians favor sweet, cool treats? Desserts in India are very much like many other places in the Middle East and Mediterranean areas. Full of fruit, honey and nuts and flavored with rose, saffron, cardamom and other spices. There are many baked, fried and molded treats. But there are also many desserts made with milk, yogurt and cheese to help cool the palate after a heavy meal rich with spices.

One of my favorite Indian desserts / drinks is a mango lassi. A lassi is a drink made with yogurt and you can use any fruit or herb in it that you like. It’s extremely refreshing and satisfying. Try making this to wish summer good-bye!

1 cup Mango, Fresh or Frozen
 ¾ cup Yogurt
 ½ cup Milk or Water
 1 tbsp Sugar or Honey
 ¼ tsp Ground Cardamom
 Ice Cubes
 Chopped Almonds, Optional

In a blender, combind the mango, milk or water, sugar or honey and the cardamom. Blend well.
