Homemade Old-Fashioned Applesauce

Applesauce is one of those comfort foods that takes us back to our childhoods. Who doesn’t remember eating applesauce? Applesauce, especially with a sprinkle of cinnamon on it, always makes me think of autumn 🙂 Sauces made with fruit became popular in medieval Europe. It was a good way to preserve a bountiful harvest.

Everyone needs a good recipe for homemade applesauce and here is mine! It is an old Shaker recipe that I found in one of my cookbooks. It’s very easy, but does take some time and attention. Store in the refrigerator.

4 Pounds Apples, Peeled, Cored and Thinly Sliced (About 12 large apples)
 1 cup Sugar
½ cup to 1 cup Hot Water
 ¾ tsp Ground Cinnamon (Optional)

1

In a large Dutch oven, kettle or pot mix the apples, sugar and cinnamon.

2

Let stand for 30 minutes until juices start to form. Stir once or twice.

3

Cook covered over very low heat until very juicy, about 10 minutes.

4

Continue cooking over medium heat until soft and desired thickness for about 20 to 30 minutes.

5

During those 20 to 30 minutes, watch the apples carefully so they do not scorch or burn. You may add the 1/2 cup to 1 cup of hot water at this time to help with that.

6

When the apples are done, you can either mash them with a potato masher to make them more like applesauce or blend them on low speed in a blender.
