Plain Or Exotic? – Ideas to Dress Up Your Oatmeal
Dressing up oatmeal, or any other hot grain cereal, is not hard. It’s as simple as adding something that you love on top! Maybe it’s a little butter and brown sugar. Or some cream and strawberries.
If you want to go more exotic, try out something like tahini and honey or yogurt, sugar and a small sprinkle of cardamom, cinnamon and ginger.
And here is a tip for you: whatever you chose to put in, I have found that instead of putting all the toppings on top, load them into the bottom of the bowl while the oatmeal is cooking. That way, once you pour the hot oatmeal on top, everything gets warmed up and you can stir them all in. Nothing is worse than eating all the toppings off the top of the oatmeal only to have plain, bland oatmeal at the bottom of the bowl!
Here are some other toppings you might want to try:
Shredded coconut
Nuts – sunflower, pumpkin seeds, almonds, pecans, walnuts, etc.
Molasses or maple syrup
Sliced peaches, apples, pears. (Try to use what is seasonal or use frozen, thawed fruit.)
Orange marmalade or some other jam
Shavings of dark chocolate
Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, allspice
Dried fruits, like blueberries and cherries or dates
Milk – Almond milk, plain whole milk, goat milk, heavy cream
Almond butter or peanut butter
Mashed sweet potatoes or pumpkin
