One of our family favorite bread recipes is coming One of our family favorite bread recipes is coming to the blog today! 😋

This is a recipe passed along by my aunt. The oats and cinnamon give the bread a special touch that I have never seen in any other bread recipe. And I love that one recipe makes two loaves! You can freeze the second loaf for later or just devour it too 😉

There is something so special to me about taking t There is something so special to me about taking the time to sit down and write out a recipe in a personal cookbook. It might take 10 minutes, but you have that recipe and all its history forever.

Maybe it's the old soul part of me, but I love seeing hand written recipes and reading the comments and notes often included. They are their own kind of heirloom.

I started my personal cookbook when I was a teenager and have enjoyed adding, subtracting and updating it through the years. More than once, I've found a recipe in there I thought I had lost!

Have you ever considered starting your own personal cookbook? It's so easy just to look up a recipe online now, but sometimes it's nice to flip open a cookbook and find a favorite family recipe waiting for you.

Before the days of pre-ground or instant coffee, you would buy the whole, roasted coffee beans at your local grocery or general store and grind them yourself at home. Some people even bought the green coffee beans and roasted them themselves first ☕

For anyone wondering what cake I decided to make f For anyone wondering what cake I decided to make for my birthday, here it is! 😁🎂

I went Old Hollywood this year and ended up making an orange lemon three-layer chiffon cake! Chiffon cakes have a rather unique history.

First created by a Californian insurance agent, they became wildly popular in the 1940s and 50s. The chiffon cake was rumored to be made with a "secret" ingredient and was baked and served at the fashionable Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood. 

The insurance agent eventually sold the recipe to General Mills and the secret turned out to be vegetable oil! The chiffon cake is made light by separating the eggs, mixing the yolks with oil and then beating the whites into meringue. Then the meringue is carefully folded into the cake batter and cooked making a wonderful, spongy cake!

This might be one of my favorite cakes so far! ☺️

I've been enjoying my tiny, but growing, collectio I've been enjoying my tiny, but growing, collection of regional cookbooks lately.

You might have a few of these yourself or someone in your family probably does. They're cookbooks that were created often for sale usually for a school or special event and the contributors are usually moms, grandmas and teachers. 

Sometimes, they don't come in the greatest condition. They're torn, stained or used. But they hold a bit of history that is undeniably local and unique. 

Next time you see one of these at your local library, bookstore or somewhere else, give it a look through and see what you can find. 

Where else can you find a cookbook full of unique recipes like herbed green beans, mock venison, pear relish and black walnut pie? 😁

Working on figuring out what cake to make for my b Working on figuring out what cake to make for my birthday! 🎂 I love making my cake and this year I'm thinking something citrus - lemon 🍋/ lime or orange 🍊. All those fruits are in season right now. 

Or maybe a chiffon cake? 🤔 I've never made one of those before, but they were very popular cakes in the 1950s.
