Before the advent of all the time saving devices and appliances we have now, housework and dishes use to be a major undertaking. There was no need to go to the gym when you were carrying heavy pails of water, beating rugs and making bread by hand!
Dishes are a chore no matter which way you look at it. At least now, unlike our ancestors before us, we have dishwashers that take some of the work out of making a meal!
Doing the dishes could very well be looked at as a minor form of exercise. After all you’re scrubbing, bending and reaching 🙂 Quite an arm work out!
And to make the dishes seem to almost wash themselves, many of our grandmothers and mothers before us liked to sing or listen to music or radio programs while they cleaned. The radio was invented at the turn of the century, but didn’t make it into people’s homes until the 1930s. Here’s some great vintage music clips from the 1930s through the 1960s for you to enjoy while you scrub and suds those dishes! Or use them as a playlist while you work out or run on the treadmill! 🙂
